{Home} Dining Area
As promised I am giving a tour of my house one room at a time. Since the main area of my house is really one big room with no walls I am cheating a little by calling each section a different room. The dining area is immediately across the bar from the kitchen, some would call it part of the kitchen
.
Under the bar I have these chairs that I bought at Salvation Army for $6 each. I know they are too short for barstools, I really bought them just to have extra chairs to pull around the table when I have guests over. But since I don’t have any barstools yet (I have my eye on some, I’m waiting for them to go on sale) these are filling in.
My artwork on the wall is from the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I found a 1959 Travelers Insurance calender with Currier & Ives prints. I chose my two favorite ones, framed ‘em, and hung ‘em.
Under the prints is cedar-lined chest made of oak that my brother Jeffrey made for me as a Christmas gift when I was 14 years old.
I love my farmhouse table. It’s big enough for several people to fit around and it’s sturdy. I got it at Furniture Factory Outlet World, that place is huge, and so much fun to poke around in.
Now, as for my chairs…you might be asking yourself what the deal is with those. I like a mismatched/unique look and I like to not spend much $$$, so I came up with this idea. I bought single chairs from places like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity Restore, and Salvation Army and then painted them black. My criteria when looking for them was: they must be sturdy, they must be cheap, they must be stained (not painted), and they must NOT match. If you are like me you love to see before and after pictures so here you go:
I spray painted them black, then rubbed some of the black paint off with steel wool so that a little of the stain would show through, then finished it off with some polyurethane. If you’re counting you see that I only have five black chairs around my table. The sixth chair hasn’t been painted yet. I do my painting outside and the weather hasn’t been very accomodating for outdoor projects lately.
Back in the corner is a small bookshelf topped by a globe. Yes, this is a multi-purpose room, in addition to being a dining room it’s also a school room. This is where we keep our school books and supplies.
And this is what our table looks like most mornings.
So that’s our dining area, thanks for stopping by!

Alicia, your pictures are so good! I love the before and after of the chairs! Also, cute of Samantha doing school in a coat with no shoes
)!! You have a beautiful house. Love your “April” calendar page pic! Isn’t it a little high though? Lol!
Haha Holly, don’t you have some strawberries to harvest or something?
I love it! Especially the mismatched chairs. I am a HUGE fan of buying cheap furniture and painting it. At this very moment I’m waiting for my kitchen island to dry (which is really an old table that my brother built up for me) I’ve sanded it down and applied some “weathered crackle” glaze to various places and then I’m going to paint it black and let the original green paint “crackle” through. I had no idea that Jeff could build furniture like that, it looks like he did a great job. I can’t wait to see more of your house!
Thanks Holly, I would love to see your house sometime, Bobbie told me you like old stuff, too. Your island sounds so cute, I’ve never tried the crackle glaze, but it sounds fun. Jeffrey is a very good wood worker, he does it from scratch. In fact, he built that chest out of a tree that fell in his yard.
Love it! And even though you didn’t touch on your curtains, I did notice them and think they are gorgeous!
Thanks Bobbie, they came from Target. In fact, I think every curtain in my house came from Target!
Alicia, I can’t wait to see the rest of the house, it looks beautiful!
I love it when people take something old and make it new again! My dream is to have a shop specializing in refurbished furniture! Our whole house is furnished with items like that or things Tommy and the boys have built.
Tommy is so talented too Mica, I bet ya’ll could make that work.
OH I cant wait to come and see it !! not just pictures and I LOVE the fact that you like refurbished stuff, you know with Dad and Paw Paw being the Antique/Auctions business. I have seen so much stuff that I wish I would have purchased for my house. If you are ever in monroe check out the curious cat, or the Antique mall in Marshville I think you would like them!!! I am going to get down there one of these days. I love all the pictures that you have posted. Take Care!!
I would love for you to come visit! And I’ll have to check out those places you mentioned, thanks!
I love your table & mis-matched chair!!
